Where can I store luggage in Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen started as a quiet fishing village and somehow turned into one of the most visited spots on Mexico's Caribbean coast. The transformation happened fast, but the town still has a personality that bigger resort cities don't. The main draw is 5th Avenue, or Quinta Avenida, a pedestrian-only strip that runs parallel to the beach for over 20 blocks. It's packed with restaurants, bars, shops, and street performers, and it's where most visitors end up spending a big chunk of their time.

Beyond 5th Avenue, the beach itself is white sand and turquoise water. The Cozumel ferry leaves from the pier right downtown, which makes Playa a natural base for island day trips. Cenotes are scattered all over the surrounding jungle and they're some of the most incredible natural swimming holes you'll ever see. Xcaret eco-park is just down the coast, and Tulum's clifftop ruins are about an hour south. Playa sits right in the middle of the Riviera Maya, so it's a launchpad for just about everything on this stretch of coast.

All of those day trips and beach days are a lot better without luggage. BagsAway has storage locations across Playa del Carmen inside vetted local businesses. Book online, drop your bags in about 30 seconds, and go explore the Riviera Maya hands-free. Every bag is insured up to $1,200.

BagsAway: Luggage Storage Across Playa del Carmen

BagsAway works like Airbnb but for your bags. We partner with local shops, hotels, cafes, and businesses in Playa del Carmen that have safe, secure space for your stuff. Each location is vetted, your bags get sealed and tagged, and everything is insured up to $1,200. No lockers, no coins, no stress about leaving your things with a random shop.

Playa draws travellers from everywhere. Backpackers heading down the coast, families on resort vacations, cruise passengers taking the ferry from Cozumel, and digital nomads who set up here for months at a time. Lots of those people end up needing somewhere to put their bags for a few hours. You checked out of your hostel, the ADO bus to Tulum isn't until evening, and you want to spend the afternoon swimming in a cenote. That's where we come in.

Where to find luggage storage in Playa del Carmen

Our BagDrop network covers the spots where visitors spend the most time. Here's where you can store your stuff:

    5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida)

5th Avenue is the spine of Playa del Carmen. This pedestrian boulevard runs north-south for over 20 blocks and it's where most of the action is. Restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, clothing boutiques, and street food vendors line both sides. At night the whole strip lights up and the crowds multiply. It's a fantastic walk, but it's also the worst place to drag luggage. The street is paved but bumpy in spots, the crowd flow is unpredictable, and shop owners aren't thrilled about bags knocking into their displays. Drop your stuff at a nearby BagDrop and stroll 5th Avenue the right way.

    Cozumel Ferry Terminal

The ferry to Cozumel leaves from the pier at the east end of Calle 1 Sur, right in the heart of Playa. Thousands of people pass through here daily heading to and from the island. The terminal area is small and there's no public luggage storage. If you're taking the ferry for a day trip to Cozumel and don't want to bring everything with you on the boat, a BagDrop near the terminal is the move. Travel light to the island and pick up your bags when you get back.

Downtown Playa (west of 5th Avenue)

Once you go west of 5th Avenue, Playa del Carmen gets more local and less touristy. Avenida 10 and the surrounding streets have cheaper restaurants, grocery stores, and the kind of taco spots where the locals eat. The ADO bus terminal is also in this area. If you arrived by bus or you're passing through between destinations, a BagDrop downtown means you can explore the real Playa without your travel bags.

    Beach area and beach clubs

Playa's beach runs the full length of town and it's a mix of public stretches and beach clubs like Mamita's, Lido, and Kool. The sand is white, the water is warm, and the vibe is relaxed during the week and lively on weekends. Taking bags to the beach is never a good idea. Sand gets into everything, salt water ruins zippers, and you can't exactly go swimming while keeping an eye on your suitcase. Store your bags and head to the beach with nothing but a towel and sunscreen.

    Playacar

Playacar is the gated resort community at the south end of Playa del Carmen. It's home to several all-inclusive resorts, a golf course, and the Playacar ruins (a small Mayan site right in the neighbourhood). The area is quieter and more spread out than central Playa. If you're transitioning between a resort stay and an independent trip, or leaving Playacar to explore the town, a BagDrop near the entrance saves you from hauling bags around.

Other luggage storage options in Playa del Carmen

Here's a look at what else is available in the area.

    Cancun International Airport (CUN)

CUN is the closest major airport, about 45 minutes to an hour north of Playa by bus or car. The airport has some luggage storage options but they can be expensive and have limited hours. If you're spending your last day in Playa before a late flight, it makes more sense to use a BagsAway BagDrop in town and enjoy a few more hours on the beach.

    ADO bus terminal

The ADO bus station in Playa del Carmen connects you to Cancun, Tulum, Merida, and other destinations on the Yucatan Peninsula. The station doesn't have public luggage storage. If you're between buses and want to spend a few hours exploring, a BagsAway BagDrop nearby keeps your bags safe while you hit 5th Avenue or the beach.

    Hotel and hostel storage

Hotels and hostels in Playa will usually hold bags for current guests on checkout day. Hostels in particular tend to have a luggage room, but it's shared and not always secure. The downside is you're locked into going back to that specific place when you need your stuff, which can eat into your day if your plans take you to another part of town.

    Xcaret and theme parks

Xcaret, Xel-Ha, and other eco-parks near Playa have locker rentals inside the park, but they're designed for valuables while you swim, not for full-size luggage. If you're doing a park day between checkout and your next destination, store your big bags at a BagDrop in Playa and bring only what you need to the park.
