Where can I store luggage in Tulum?

Tulum is the place where Maya ruins sit on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and honestly, the photos don't do it justice. The archaeological site is right on the coast, with crumbling stone temples framed by turquoise water and white sand below. It's one of the most photographed spots in Mexico, and when you see it in person you'll understand why. The ruins alone make the trip worthwhile, but Tulum has a lot more going on.

The beach hotel zone stretches along a single road south of the ruins, lined with boutique hotels, beach clubs, yoga studios, and restaurants that range from rustic taco stands to high-end dining. The cenotes around Tulum are legendary. Gran Cenote, Cenote Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote, and dozens more offer some of the clearest, most surreal swimming you'll ever experience. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO site just south of town with mangroves, lagoons, and wildlife you won't see anywhere else. And Tulum Pueblo, the actual downtown, has grown into its own scene with restaurants, bars, and a more local, less polished vibe than the beach strip.

Between the ruins, the cenotes, the beach, and the pueblo, you're going to be moving around all day. Luggage makes that miserable. BagsAway has storage locations in Tulum inside vetted local businesses. Book online in about 30 seconds, drop your bags, and go swim in a cenote or climb the ruins without worrying about your stuff. Every bag is insured up to $1,200.

    BagsAway: Luggage Storage Across Tulum

BagsAway works like Airbnb but for your bags. We partner with local shops, cafes, hotels, and businesses in Tulum that have safe, secure space for your things. Each location is vetted, your bags get sealed and tagged, and everything is insured up to $1,200. No lockers, no coins, no asking strangers to watch your stuff at the cenote.

Tulum pulls a wild mix of travellers. Backpackers working their way down the Riviera Maya, honeymooners at boutique beach hotels, yoga retreat groups, and day trippers from Cancun and Playa del Carmen all converge here. The town is spread out between the pueblo, the beach zone, and the ruins, and getting around usually means bikes, taxis, or colectivos. Bags don't travel well on any of those. Whether you're passing through for the day or switching accommodations, we make sure your stuff is safe while you enjoy Tulum.

    Sound familiar?

    • You arrived from Playa del Carmen for the day and want to explore hands-free.
    • You're biking the beach road and there's no way you're cycling with a backpack full of stuff.
    • You're doing a Sian Ka'an tour and need to travel as light as possible.
    • You're switching from the pueblo to the beach zone and there's a gap between check-out and check-in.

Where to find luggage storage in Tulum

Our BagDrop network covers the spots where visitors spend the most time. Here's the layout:

    Tulum Pueblo (downtown)

Tulum Pueblo is the actual town, built along the main highway (Avenida Tulum) about 3 kilometres inland from the beach. This is where you'll find the ADO bus station, taco joints, grocery stores, bike rental shops, and a growing number of restaurants and bars. The pueblo is more affordable and more local than the beach zone, and it's where a lot of budget travellers and digital nomads base themselves. If you arrived by bus or colectivo, a BagDrop in the pueblo lets you drop your stuff right away and head to the beach or ruins without backtracking.

    Beach hotel zone

The beach zone runs along a single road (the Boca Paila road) from the T-junction south toward Sian Ka'an. It's lined with boutique hotels, beach clubs, restaurants, and yoga studios. The road is sandy, there are no sidewalks in most stretches, and getting around is mainly by bike or taxi. Dragging a roller bag down this road is genuinely awful. Sand, potholes, and no shade make it one of the worst places to travel with luggage. A BagDrop in or near the beach zone lets you bike, walk, and beach-hop without the hassle.

    Tulum ruins area

The Tulum archaeological site is on the coast at the north end of the beach zone. There's a parking area with shops and restaurants, and from there it's a walk (or a short shuttle ride) to the ruins entrance. The site itself involves walking on uneven ground in the sun, and there's a small beach below the cliffs that you can swim at. Bags are a liability at the ruins. You'll be climbing stairs, squeezing through narrow paths, and trying to take photos. Store your things at a BagDrop before visiting and you'll actually enjoy the experience.

    Cenote corridor

The cenotes near Tulum are spread along the highway and side roads between the pueblo and Coba. Gran Cenote is the most famous and it's just a few minutes from town. Cenote Dos Ojos, Cenote Calavera, and Casa Cenote are all within easy reach. Most cenotes have basic changing areas and lockers for small valuables, but they're not set up for full luggage. If you're doing a cenote-hopping day, store your big bags at a BagDrop and bring only what you need for swimming.

    Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve entrance

Sian Ka'an starts where the beach road ends, south of the hotel zone. This UNESCO-protected reserve covers over a million acres of wetlands, mangroves, and Caribbean coastline. Tours usually involve boats, kayaks, and floating down canals. You need to travel light for these tours, and there's nowhere to store luggage at the reserve entrance. A BagDrop in the beach zone or pueblo before your tour departure is the way to go.

Other luggage storage options in Tulum

Here's what else is available in the area so you can compare.

    Cancun International Airport (CUN)

CUN is the closest major airport, about 90 minutes to two hours north of Tulum by car or bus. The airport has some luggage storage but it's a long way from Tulum. If you're spending your last day in Tulum before a late flight, use a BagDrop in town and enjoy a few more cenote swims or one more sunset on the beach. The Tulum airport is under construction but not yet operational for most flights.

    ADO bus station

The ADO station in Tulum Pueblo connects to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Merida, and other Yucatan destinations. The station doesn't offer public luggage storage. If you're between buses and want to spend the day at the beach or ruins, a BagsAway BagDrop nearby in the pueblo is the simplest solution.

    Hotel and hostel storage

Hotels and hostels in Tulum generally hold bags for current guests on checkout day. Beach zone hotels may be less flexible since space is tight and staff is minimal at smaller boutique properties. The biggest drawback is geography: if your hotel is in the beach zone but you're spending the day in the pueblo or at the ruins, going back for your bags adds a round trip you don't need.
