Current COVID-19 Travel Restrictions (July 2020 Update)

The world is gradually taking strides towards recovering from the effects of COVID-19. People are undoubtedly itching to resume their travel plans but with different rules and regulations in different locations, it is important to stay informed. The following post sheds light on the travel restrictions in some major cities across Canada, the United States, and Europe as of July 2020.

Canada

Ontario, Toronto

Other than the international travel bans of Canada, Toronto is yet to implement any local restrictions. Premier Doug Ford simply asks that Torontonians avoid non-essential travel and practice social distancing. When visiting Toronto, we recommend storing your luggage with BagsAway to fully enjoy your time here.

Quebec, Quebec City

As the epicenter of Canada’s outbreak, Quebec employ strict travel policies. Quebec City has seen the brunt of these restrictions, having checkpoints positioned at interprovincial bridges and roadways, enforcing a ban on non-essential travel into western Quebec.

British Columbia, Victoria

July in Victoria will be relatively stress-free. The lack of travel restrictions and absence of local checkpoints leaves the city, and the province, open for Victorians. Premier John Horgan only asks that non-essential travel be avoided as much as possible.

Alberta, Edmonton

Much like their British Columbian neighbors, Edmontonians have avoided local travel bans. However, as a result of Canada’s international restrictions and an emphasis on avoiding non-essential travel, the city has seen reduced tourism.

United States

Washington D.C

Washington D.C is in Phase 2 of reopening. Public transportation links and ride-shares are now available for non-essential travel. Despite allowing visitors to enter the capital, Mayor Murial E. Bowser is actively discouraging non-essential travel outside the D.C area. Washington is also applying a mandatory quarantine to those travelling from Covid-19 hot spots.

New York, Albany

New York saw an impressive decrease in coronavirus cases, becoming one of the safest states in the US. As a result, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued tighter travel restrictions. Any travelers from states with a positive test rate higher than 10 in 100,000 (over a 7-day rolling average) are subject to a 14-day quarantine. These travel restrictions also apply to New York’s five boroughs of The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

Florida, Tallahassee

Much like D.C, Tallahassee has entered Phase 2 of restoration. Governor Ron Desantis has reinstated public transportation through the city, allowing for less restricted travel. Florida has not been given green status, which limits the personal travel of citizens and service-people.

California, Sacramento

California has not been granted green status, which applies extensive limitations to personal travel between states. Locals are being asked to follow the California Responsible Travel Code (CRTC), which focuses on safety and education regarding Covid-19. The local government also asks that people stick to social distancing rules and limit their travel to a minimum.

Washington, Olympia

Olympia has initiated Phase 3 of their recovery plan. Non-essential travel is now permitted, and the city has seen the partial reopening of public spaces. Much like the rest of the US, Olympia insists that visitors abide by the rules of the CDC when moving through public areas.

Texas, Austin

Austin is very cautiously entering the next phase of their reopening strategy. Despite the relaxed restrictions on local travel, Austin officials still ask that non-essential trips are avoided. Governor Abbott also asks that citizens and visitors stick to the recommendations of public health officials and the CDC.

Pennsylvania, Harrisburg

Though they haven’t banned it altogether, Pennsylvania advises against international travel both in and out of the state. They also ask that those within the state and its capital remain indoors and away from the public.

Illinois, Springfield

To halt Covid-19, Illinois has implemented after-travel precautions. If you are coming from an area of high infection, the government will place you in isolation for 14 days. Travellers are also required to follow the instructions of the CDC.

Ohio, Columbus

Ohio was originally on track to lift travel restrictions in early June. However, following a review from government officials, Governor Mike DeWine saw it best to extend these restrictions until July 1st. As a result, non-essential travel is still discouraged, and locals have been asked to remain in isolation.

North Carolina, Raleigh

Raleigh is currently in Phase 2 of its reopening plan, and North Carolina is subject to the ‘safer at home’ strategy. Phase 2 puts extensive limits on travel to and from Raleigh and is expected to continue until July 17th. North Carolina’s next step will be to reopen businesses, open the state and ease travel restrictions.

Michigan, Lansing

Joining California and Florida, Michigan is without green status, meaning the state is subject to severe travel restrictions by the U.S military. A rising number of coronavirus infections has made Michigan a Covid-19 hot spot.

Florida, Miami

In an attempt to reduce the spread of Covid-19, the city of Miami has closed its borders to international travel. With certain exceptions, foreign nationals who have been in China, Iran, Europe or Brazil in the last 14 days, are prohibited from entering the city. Additionally, as of July 2, Mayor Francis Suarez has extended the city’s state of emergency declaration. When things do return to normal, BagsAway will be safely keeping your bags, while you enjoy this beautiful city!

Illinois, Chicago

Chicago is now in Phase 4 of its recovery strategy, with Mayor Lightfoot approving less restricted movement within the city. Despite the ease in local travel, Chicago is still closed off to foreign nationals from various countries including China, Iran and the UK.

Washington, Seattle

Seattle is currently in Phase 2 of the ‘Safe Start’ reopening plan. Essential travel and travel for other activities are both allowed under Phases 1 and 2. Although there are no domestic travel bans currently affecting Seattle, reduced flights and a lack of operating hotels have made travel much more challenging. If you do end up visiting Seattle, then utilize the luggage storage offered by BagsAway

Massachusetts, Boston

All travelers returning to Boston – including Bostonians – are required to self-isolate upon arrival. However, since July 1, visitors travelling from New York, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and New Jersey are exempt from the quarantine. Additionally, federal employees entering the city for work are not asked to self-isolate.

California, Los Angeles

As with the rest of the US, Los Angeles does not permit entry to foreign nationals travelling from regions such as Brazil, Iran and the European Schengen area. However, LAX is one of six airports accepting flights transporting US citizens from China. If you do end up visiting Los Angeles, don’t forget to store your luggage with BagsAway

California, San Francisco

As with Sacramento, San Francisco falls under military imposed travel restrictions. Because of California’s lack of green status, its borders are subject to increased monitoring and closures. San Francisco’s citizens are also urged to follow the guidelines of the California Responsible Travel Code (CRTC).

Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

Despite a lack of travel restrictions between states, Philadelphia authorities have implemented extensive ‘after-arrival precautions’. Those visiting from Alabama, Texas and other areas of high infection, are asked to quarantine for 14 days upon entry to the city.

Europe

England, London

London is still open to visitors despite Covid-19, however, some local businesses and recreational centers are still closed. Public transportation has now reopened but travelers must abide by social distancing rules. The UK government has also given the green light travel outside of the country for its citizens. If you are visiting London, don’t forget to store your luggage with BagsAway

France, Paris

Moving into July, those entering Paris from the UK and EU no longer have to provide an international travel certificate or prove their trip is essential. Those traveling from outside the UK and EU must provide these documents and are required to have a 14-day quarantine.

The Netherlands, Amsterdam

The travel ban on non-EU nationals was officially lifted on July 1st, opening Amsterdam to the rest of the world. If you are traveling from a COVID-19 hot spot, or are at high risk of infection, you must be quarantined for 14-days before freely roaming the country.

Catalonia, Barcelona

Barcelona is no longer in a state of emergency and is welcoming UK and EU travellers through their borders. Despite these relaxed entry requirements, the region is still on the lookout for spikes in infection.

Germany, Berlin

There are currently no COVID-19 restrictions when entering Germany from countries like the UK. If you’re entering from an area of high infection, you will be subject to a 14-day quarantine. The restrictions on those travelling from other countries will be lifted as of July 2nd.

Spain, Madrid

Madrid’s state of emergency was initiated in March and has since been lifted. Movement between regions is now permitted and land borders have been opened. Upon arrival, all visitors must take part in a test screening to assess their health. This will include a temperature check and a visual evaluation.

Italy, Rome

Although Rome is beginning to loosen travel restrictions, they are still relatively stringent. If you arrive in the city from a COVID-19 hot spot you must take part in a 14-day quarantine. All visitors to Italy are also forbidden from using public transport.

Hamburg

As with the rest of Germany, Hamburg has no Covid-19 related restrictions on travel from countries like the UK. The local government requires you to pass a screening upon arrival to the region, if you display positive test results then you will be required to quarantine for 14-days.

Austria, Vienna

If you are travelling from a high-risk area, you must provide a microbiological test that is no more than 4 days old. You will be asked to isolate for 14-days if you cannot provide a medical document at the border.

Russia, Moscow

The Russian government requires anybody that enters the country to isolate for 14-days, regardless of whether they show symptoms or not. Travelers must also comply with any additional screenings during your quarantine.

Turkey, Istanbul

Turkey has had open borders since June 12. All travelers are subject to a medical evaluation upon arrival and as with other EU countries, will be required to take part in a quarantine if they show symptoms.

Ukraine, Kiev

All foreign nationals must prove their health at the Ukrainian border. Failure to do so could result in isolation. If you are travelling from ‘red-zones’, or an area with a high infection rate, you will be quarantined and observed for a minimum of 14 days.
